Women's Agricultural Empowerment

The Program

When Women Thrive, Communities Flourish

Women in the Bono Region of Ghana are extraordinary farmers, entrepreneurs, and community builders. They produce the majority of the region's food, feed their families through climate uncertainty, and stretch every cedi further than most can imagine. Yet they receive less than 10% of available agricultural training and almost none of the credit that could transform their farms into businesses.

Our Women's Agricultural Empowerment Program is built on a simple belief: give a woman the right knowledge, a supportive cooperative, and access to small, flexible capital — and watch her transform everything around her. The program has three interconnected pillars: climate-smart farming training, cooperative formation, and microfinance access.

Climate-Smart Farming

A 12-week training program covering drought-resistant crops, soil health management, water conservation techniques, organic pest control, and post-harvest handling. Delivered in local languages by certified agricultural extension officers.

  • Drought-resistant crop varieties
  • Soil mapping and composting
  • Drip irrigation basics
  • Post-harvest storage methods

Cooperative Formation

We facilitate the formation of women's cooperatives — groups of 10 to 30 women who pool resources, share labour, access markets together, and provide each other with social support and accountability.

  • Cooperative governance training
  • Shared equipment access
  • Collective market bargaining
  • Peer accountability structures

Microfinance Access

Through partnerships with local financial institutions, we help cooperative members access small, flexible loans with fair terms — often the first formal credit any of these women have ever held.

  • Financial literacy training
  • Loan application support
  • Business planning guidance
  • Savings group facilitation
Impact Story

Fatima's Journey

Fatima joined one of our women's cooperatives in Sunyani with a small plot of land and a determination to feed her four children without depending on seasonal rains. After completing our climate-smart farming training, she adopted water-harvesting techniques that extended her growing season by six weeks.

With her first microfinance loan, she purchased improved seed varieties and a hand pump for irrigation. In her first full season using the new techniques, she doubled her yield. She has since repaid her loan in full, hired two neighbours, and expanded into selling processed cassava products at the local market.

"The cooperative gave me more than a loan — it gave me a network, a voice, and a business. My children will never go hungry again because of what I learned."

— Fatima, Cooperative Member, Sunyani
