Every Girl Deserves to Finish School
For girls in rural Ghana, the decision to stay in school is rarely simple. School fees, examination costs, the price of uniforms and textbooks — these expenses add up quickly. When household income is stretched thin, a girl's education is often the first sacrifice. Families do not make this choice because they do not value education. They make it because they have no alternative.
The Rev Dr Karla J Cooper Foundation's Girls' Scholarship Program exists to eliminate that impossible choice. We cover the full cost of secondary school attendance — fees, uniforms, books, and examination costs — for girls who demonstrate academic potential and face genuine financial hardship. We do not just pay the bills and walk away. We walk alongside every scholar through mentorship, community support, and ongoing encouragement.
A Scholarship That Goes Beyond Fees
Financial Coverage
Full payment of school fees, examination levies, uniforms, shoes, and all required textbooks and stationery.
Mentorship Pairing
Each scholar is matched with an educated Ghanaian woman — from the diaspora or locally — who provides guidance, encouragement, and life coaching.
Family Engagement
We work with families and traditional leaders to build community support around each scholar — ensuring she returns home to a village that celebrates her achievement.
University Pathways
High-performing scholars receive additional support navigating university applications, scholarship searches, and career planning beyond secondary school.
Who Can Apply
Our scholarship is open to girls enrolled in or preparing to enter secondary school in rural areas of Ghana. Selection is based on three criteria:
- Demonstrated Academic Potential — Strong performance in primary school or demonstrated motivation and commitment, verified by a teacher or school head.
- Verified Financial Need — Documentation or community verification that school fees present a genuine barrier to continued education.
- Community Commitment — A willingness to give back to her community through mentorship, civic service, or education advocacy once she completes her schooling.
Abena's Story
Abena grew up in a small village outside Sunyani, the third of seven children. At fourteen, her family could no longer afford her school fees. Through our scholarship program, she not only completed secondary school — she earned the highest marks in her district and was admitted to the University of Ghana. Today she studies public health and plans to return to the Bono Region as a doctor.
"The foundation did not just pay my fees. They believed in me before I fully believed in myself."
